I have had these two "basket" pots for a number of years and wondered if anyone had any info. about them. I believe they are from the American Southwest and may be from Santa Clara or San Ildelonso pueblos. I am especially curious if anyone has more information of there possible date of production and what if any their value could be. No signatures on the bottom. I would love to have any more information. Thanks.....
They are from Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico, and date to ca. 1940's-1950's. The way each was fired determined the color. They were made the same way, from the same clay, but the black is a result of a reduction firing, where no oxygen is allowed to reach the pot during the firing, while the red is from an oxidation firing, where air reached the pot...preventing the chemical reaction that turned the red clay black.
Thanks for all the detail information. Appreciate your knowledge.
