I am just trying to figure out what this was used for originally. Very thick glass, probably a 5 gallon glass bowl or so.

should have a glass ring around top with a stem to act as a valve. to pull vacuum and also release vacuum pressure

What would it be used for exactly? Why so big?

It's a vacuum chamber for use in medical or chemical laboratory's. Lid and base are ground to fit and sealed with high vacuum greese
      hope this helps.

Used one of these for many years. It is indeed a vac bowl as stated by nw and TallCakes.I used it to take gasses out of urethane before processing.Without this the urethane was full of air bubbles when cured.
