I am just trying to figure out what this was used for originally. Very thick glass, probably a 5 gallon glass bowl or so.
What is this? | ||

it's a Pyrex desiccator
should have a glass ring around top with a stem to act as a valve. to pull vacuum and also release vacuum pressure
What would it be used for exactly? Why so big?
It's a vacuum chamber for use in medical or chemical laboratory's. Lid and base are ground to fit and sealed with high vacuum greese
hope this helps.
George
My guess is a steamer for cabbage, artichokes etc..

Used one of these for many years.It is indeed a vac bowl as stated by nw and TallCakes.I used it to take gasses out of urethane before processing.Without this the urethane was full of air bubbles when cured.
