Remarkably bad photos of a charming vaseline glass "Bull Dog's Head" candy container, from Boyd's Crystal Art Glass. It is really a very detailed and beautiful item. The fourth photo captures the detail much better than the other photos. I couldn't capture the lavender fire in the interior of the ears without losing most of the detail. Bright green glow, with lavender fire. About the size of a large Sunkist orange. Woof, woof!

Hi, Tony! Yes, it is the same mold, but this item was issued in vaseline glass. You really cannot see the marvelous details in ANY of my photos. All of the photos except the black and white photo No. 4 distort the masterly modeling, and utterly fail to capture this marvelous and complex piece. I simply don't have the necessary skills to take an excellent photograph of this piece. So, please look at Photo No. 4 and use your imagination - throw in an intensely vibrant green glow shot through with lavender fire, and you will have 'seen' this piece for the delightful art that it is. Thanks very much for your kind interest and thoughtful comments!! : )

trying to figure out what color this guy/gal is without the black light. Looks almost clear in the last photo. Wish CW had a uranium glass category for the many glowing examples that show up here. Vaseline glass is uranium glass but the color was first called canary and later came to be called Vaseline by collectors due to the color resemblance to Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.

Hi, TallCakes! Wish you were the one taking the photos! There's a lot of craft and trial-and-error required to take masterly photos of these things. You've mastered the skills, and I have clearly not. Sigh. Anyway, I was frustrated by my inability to capture the great detail on these pieces, so I applied a software filter to one of the photos, and got photo No. 4, which alone captures some decent detail. The modeling is very fine. As for color in natural light, it is a clear yellow glass. (Handling it, you would remark upon its 'greasy feel'.) Under blacklight, it's bright and glowing green, shot through with lavender fire. Yes, it would be very nice to have a dedicated category for vaseline or uranium glass. Perhaps if you suggest it to them, they might create one. Thanks so much for your kind interest and most generous assistance, sir!! : )

A bright and intense yellow - perfectly consistent with the vivid color exhibited in canary glass.
    6. TallCakes TallCakes, 12 years ago
with translucent yellow, that would seem to qualify as Vaseline glass. For my black light photos I did a lot of trial and error. What finally worked for me was full manual mode with a high F-stop that results in a slow shutter speed. The high aperture will increase the focal length and keep more of the piece in focus. But because were are dealing with a dark room under black light the shutter speed has to be very long; thus requiring a steady tripod. For instance last time I set the aperture to 20 and ISO to 200; the resultant shutter speed was 30 seconds but will vary depending on how brightly the glass glows. I also set the focus to manual and get the glass into focus with normal room light before working on the other settings in the dark.

Thank you very much, Manikin and Bruce99!! : )

Thanks so much, TallCakes, for your most generous assistance! So good of you, sir. It will take me awhile, but I will experiment with these techniques, and perhaps one day soon I shall have captured this little fella in all his glory! : D

I wouldn’t say they are bad photos anyway, if you want to see some bad ones search Vaseline on EBay and Wow Tallcakes.... All I do is move my keyboard off my desk put the piece on it, turn off the lights then snap a few photos.

Many thanks, shawn186! Your photos are good - you must be very talented to capture these things so easily. I just saw your carnival glass grape bowls. Very fine photographs! By the way, you have some splendid pieces. In fact, your opalescent creamer is one of the first things I admired when I joined CW. Very special. Thanks much for your good cheer and enthusiasm on this dog candy container!! : )

Hi, Signaholic! Many thanks for your kind and enthusiastic appreciation!! Yes, they were made in a number of colors and variations. I have seen this head in vaseline, cobalt carnival, cobalt and white slag, and now - thanks to TallCakes - in honey. You might need one. : )
    13. miKKoChristmas11 miKKoChristmas11, 12 years ago
Thank you very much, AmberRose! This is perhaps the only piece of glass you haven't yet found, bought, and shipped away to some fortunate soul! God bless your great generosity! The clock is ticking: You have one week to find one bull dog's head in each of the colors made and to send them to at least four continents...tick, tick, tick..... : )

Thank you very much, inky!! These two candy containers were hard to photograph, but I shall try out TallCakes method soon, and hope to achieve a finer image. You are a good photographer! I was very impressed by how well you captured the reflective properties of the MOP glass vase, as well as captured the 'weave' motif. RE email, thank you, dear! I will respond shortly. : )

I'm sorry that I spoke so flippantly, AmberRose. I meant my response to be a compliment, not a criticism. You are incredible at finding treasures, and amazingly generous! No, I meant to compliment you, kind lady. Please pardon my thoughtlessly phrased response. Thank you! : (

Hi MiKKoChristmas11, I love this too. One thing I would dearly love to find is a Vaseline glass animal.
