Here are two 'boonie ' hats I have recently obtained. The proper term for these are "hot weather sun hats' and this is DBDU, desert camouflage or tri-color camo. This scheme was adopted in 1999 and is still in use today although even newer color patterns have come and and are now being phased out.
Both of these hats are used and have been worn in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
The first hat belonged to a second lieutenant and the second belonged to a enlisted man named Jamison with his name also in Afghans, probably Pashto? This is somewhat common, I believe, for our military people serving in ISAF (International Security Assistance Force).

Very interesting! I had no idea that some of our forces might have their names embroidered in the language of the 'host' population.

It depends on the assignment and what makes sense.

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I wore Saudi rank on my uniform top and US rank on my hat. My name tape was in Arabic.

Thanks for the love and comments miKKo and Scottvez. I had been on a site that show a Vietnam era American ERDL camo shirt with an Arabic/English name on it and they surmised it may have been an embassy uniform.

The uniform you are talking about probably wasn't an embassy uniform. Embassy security is usually done by the USMC.

Combination names are usually a sign of an advisory job. We have had advisors in some Middle East countries since the mid 1970s.

Thank you petey for the love and again to miKKo and scottvez for the comments. As a p.s. to this post I also have an exact duplicate of this hat, right down to the colors and stitching, which was made in China.

A lot of us with a spare hat when we deployed had our names embroidered on them in Arabic as well to bring home as a souvenir or to be sent home to a family member. We were never allowed to actually wear them as part of our uniform.

Thank you for that info jonima.
