      How big is it? It looks like a old bee cage for posting.
      They use to send queen bees in the post in cages like the one you have.

      What I read is that this is an Antique Cast Iron General Store String Dispenser
      Ball with open lattice pattern shaped in two halves the twist together

      From a time when packaging at butchers shops, bakeries, fish markets and the like including a string binding for paper wrapped items this fun and eye catching egg shaped string dispenser hangs above counter or desk and releases a single strand of string while holding the ball inside the form.
