OK before you say a breast pin or coat pin let me tell how long it is.
The first picture is of it open and it is almost 16" in length... Over a foot! When it is open the chain hangs and when you close it the chain tightens. . . someone said it might be a memorial flag holder for the door ? Very interesting item though, Oh and by the way it is my Mothers and she doesn't know what it is either. . hahahaha
You've never seen a gizmo before?
It reminds me of what is called a jaw breaker bit used on mules .
Hmmm.. I always thought gizmos were plastic, blunderbuss2. *L* But seriously, I have been around horses all my life and have NEVER seen a bit anything like this. Are there any markings of ANY kind on it?? It looks like it's made to be set at a certain length and then when hung from the chain, the rods would stay at that length... but to what end, I'm clueless. Good luck and let us know if you find out anything!
My grandfather farmed with mules and he once gave me a jawbreaker bit . The reins were attached to the rings on the ends and when the reins were both pulled at the same time the sides of the bit would slide in towards the jaw pinching it in between the rings . That is why it was called a jawbreaker . I also had horses , but I never used the jawbreaker bit on any of them . To harsh for me .
I'm familiar with the "Breaker bit" for horses which I thought pushed down on the tongue. I looked at this before thinking maybe the chain slipped over the tongue but with no arms on the ends didn't see how it would work.
@DobbinDee70 & chinablue, Now that is the most interesting one I have heard of yet ! I horse or donkey bit !!! I will look into it, I will get my mother to take a look at it closer, I think she had told me there were no markings but will double check.
Never liked to use a curb/ breaker-bit but it got their attention. A 2x2 club got their attention also after they had been rapped between the ears a few times. The club hanging from my wrist, later gets their attention faster than the type of bit used.
They all have diff. personalities! If this is a bit, I'm really interested in how it works. It will probably turn out to be something for stretching shoes etc..
I'm with you, blunderbuss. I've ridden for 50 years and have never seen a bit like this.. especially with it being 16 inches long! I've used snaffles of all kinds, gag bits, pelhams, and long shanked curbs but never anything like this even with work horses. But then, I'm always learning things *S* I agree with the 2x2 theory too. Especially one that has the habit of rearing and falling on you! I still limp a little over that horse. :-)
china, you will enjoy this. I kept 5 horses in Statia & would ride a diff. 1 to town each evening for a beer(me not the horse). Had 1 I called Mister Ed who would not leave the other horses. 1st time into town, I wore myself out trying to get him to town & finally short-reigned him to a tele-pole. Forgot about Mr. Ed for hrs & when I came back & got on him, he took off at a run for the yard. After that, whenever we got close to that pole, he took off at a run past it!
They have personalities as varied as people.
the silver thing the chain is connected to has made in germany, this is Vickie's Mom
That explains everything! I should have known from the start after all the German women I've lived with. Now I don't have to puzzle over it & can sleep better tonite. Thanks for the key.
I must have missed something somewhere.. or else I'm in need of sleep.. ?
It must be for putting on German girl's tongues. I need 1 of those now.
@blunderbuss2, hahaha on the German girls tongue. . . by the way, "forgetmenot" IS my mother, the one who has the item. . . . So the silver pieces that slide in and out with the chain are marked, "Made in Germany".
You still haven't told me where I can buy one.
I still would like to know what this item is...I'm clueless still. I've looked up everything that I think it might be...to no end \; (
Did you ever see a plate hanger? It reminds me of something along those lines.
T A
Or even a hanger for jacket that you can keep inside the pocket (no hook to catch inside). I have a jacket that has a chain loop in the collar to hang it from. ;)

TA, I think you are on the right track! Knew it looked familiar but just couldn't place it.
