I purchased this piece from the James Van Fleet Estate a few years ago. He was one of the highest ranking generals (Four Star) of WWI, WWII, and the Korean war. I'm certain that he acquired this painting during one of his many tours in Europe. I've researched the initials located on the back of the painting, date and location. Did Dahl have a famous understudy that perhaps became an established artist in his own right? Do you know of any biographers of Dahl that I could perhaps contact? Thank you again for your time and consideration.
it was common in the 1800s to commission copies of paintings - usually well-known ones, but also of lovely women like this one.
