no place to hang it, but it's techniquely perfect w/ beautiful brushwork. it looks italian - probably a scene in florence or someplace similar. has anyone seen this particular painting before? it appears to be unsigned, but by the looks of the back of it, is very old. the canvas is all handspun and has lots of age to it - along w/ the stretchers. i may frame it, but not sure... i have no idea what category to put this under, as 'paintings' is not a category. i'd love any info i can get about it. thanks!
i just added more photos of this painting. It is 38.5" x 21.5" and i found some writing in chalk on the back. It says 'JW' and under it is illegible, but under that part, i think it says '1926'. i'd love to learn more about this painting. thanks.
i've just spent hours exploring the work of Francesco Guardi online through the wonderful website of the National Gallery in London. I'm pretty certain that this piece is by him or by someone who was a very good imitator of his work. I thought the piece had potential to be much older than i had originally assumed it to be. i'm very interested in any feedback - especially if you know something about 18th century italian works. this is exciting!!
if you have a moment, compare this piece w/ some of Francesco Guardi's other works: http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/francesco-guardi

here's one of Guardi's Venetian capriccios at the Hermitage:

i'm positive that this is a Francesco Guardi piece - one of his Venetian capriccios. i sent out an enquiry to sotheby's because i'd like to get it authenticated and i got an almost immediate email requesting more photos - uncropped. i posted them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/eastbaywilds/sets/72157631874613354/with/8226312492/
well, it could be by his son Giacomo Guardi.
Give Me a bit to do some comparison.
I like it, if not him, would be a close Student. But lets make sure, this is a Old Friend, has helped Me for years. Email pics to Him right away and He will get back to you!

do i tell him dizzydave sent me?!
i've been studying this piece and every guardi and follower of guardi i can lay my eyes on for 7 years now, and i'm convinced this is the real deal - and an important piece too. there are two related pieces at the national gallery in london, and i'm certain that this is the centerpiece for them. together, they form a pendant.
Thats fine, You see Him on PBS Antique Roadshow. Kewl Guy!
thanks Dizzy. i wrote to him the other night. i'll keep you posted. my email is pete@eastbaywilds.com.
Hi ho2cultcha! Did you ever have your piece authenticated or get any info confirming the artist? I came across your show and tell while doing some research on Guardi as I have a painting whose style, colors, basically everything about it, is eerily similar to yours.
