Without seeing the serial number, it's hard to say if the 1968 year is correct. It is definitely not all original. None of the paint is original and the fork is not original. Someone has added the bent springer fork at some point. The bike could possibly be one of the Schwinn Krate series, but if it is, the seat is incorrect along with the fork as I already mentioned. Also, if it were one of the Krates and a 1968, it would have a suspension "pogo' seatpost. Still a cool bike with lots of good parts including the stick shift and rear suspension shocks. Would be very cool restored to original. I've had a few myself and still have an unrestored '68 Schwinn Orange Krate.

Jeff thank you for your information. I was told it was original but i had my dougts. The serial number is JDO4967 I looked on a chart and it said if it starts with JD it was made in september of 1968. The guy we got it from told us it was a special edition that schwinn made for sears to sell that year. I don't no why he told us that because he gave us the bike for free. He said his parents bought him that bike when he was young. Are you absolutly sure that the fork are not original .

This bike has some correct parts for 68 such as the shifter (missing sideplate), the handlebars are wider than most which would be correct for 68, the seat is not correct as it would have matched the paint (68) colors were orange and red, so handle grips should be correct, the paint is for sure not correct for the year, crank and back wheels are correct, but it would not have a white wall slick, it would be blackwall or gripper slick, seat shock is correct. The knee action fork is correct but is missing the truss rods, which is what gives it the raked look (probably bent) front wheel with drum brake is correct. It is missing the rear fender and would not have a front fender for 68. It looks like the pedals are bowtie non reflector which would be correct for 68. All in all it would take quite a bit to restore this bike and since I have seen a couple on Craigslist for 600 -700 dollars, it would be cheaper to buy another than to restore this one unless it is sentimental
