Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk, CA 1899. Piece has sat unattended in the basement of family for 30 years, stored for over 60 years in total. Interior all intact, exterior has water damage, sadly. Serial number and Rue Scribe street, Paris and Bond Street, London addresses. Unlike most this trunk is not leather, it is cloth with black metal bands and black metal handles.
Sits in my family room now, family thinks I should have it restored but I fear losing the Family monogram and travel stickers on it. Thoughts anyone?
Beautiful trunk as you know. I would not even know where to begin for restoration, other than a cleaning. Usually there are ways to preserve the travel stickers, either by carefully removing them and later putting them back, or protecting them and working around them. This type of trunk however would be out of my league for advice -- but I do thank you for posting it -- a few more pics of the interior and stickers would be nice.
trunkman, thank you so much. I will surely get more photos of it posted shortly. Your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated. I live just a few minutes from an LV store and they will "repair" but not restore. I love the idea of carefully removing or working around the monogram and stickers. I did not think of that. I might make an appointment just to see what they say. Thank you again!
Oh, Bellin, good to know there are people who specialize in it. The LV store said they only repair not restore. Thank you, I will try and google that to see if I find anything out in that area.
Beautiful!
