bought this in laguna beach,ca in 2007 for $20... there are stickers on the side with Cunard Line, Cunard White Star, Railway Express (dated 7/3/32), Schweizerisches Zollgut... The passenger name printed on the labels is Mr B. Jelinek from Seattle, WA.
it's in GREAT shape -- use it for blankets now... anyone know the history of it ?
thanks!

Great trunk -- probably made in England or Germany-- certainly European circa 1900's. I have a similar one for comparison on my site. Those are birch ribs that have been molded by steam and bending. The big huge lock plate was a later addition and not original to the trunk. It looks as if it was added about the same time the trunk was made however. I love the style look and feel of these old trunks. Thanks for the post.
great! thanks so much for the info - really appreciate the quick reply - have a great week -- thx, gilly55
I have the exact same one. Mine is actually in much better condition, but no stickers on it just the initials J. S. stenciled on the top. But it did have a German newspaper inside dated Dec. 24, 1944. I always wondered about it's history and value. I think I paid $25 for it at a garage sale in Plainvew, NY in about 1977.
