I picked this up at the thrift store for three bucks. It appears to be from Onongada Pottery, before it was bought by Syracuse in the 1870s.

I'm a bit of a dilettante when it comes pottery from this age, so any help you can give is appreciated. The lid appears to match the rest and are all in good shape. It is marked "ironstone pottery". I assume this is a soup tureen, because of the shape and hole in the lid for a ladle.

Did I date this correctly? Is this a rare find, or something I can let me husband serve soup out of? He is dying to take this to dinner parties with his blue-cheese soup inside. I want your opinions before it makes it to gatherings. Thanks!

the mark appears to be the Great Seal of New York

    O.P. Co, ironstone pottery

8.5 inches tall, with lid and handle

with the lid removed, the bowl itself is 9 inches wide, and each side handle is outset one inch.

the base is 5 inches wide

there is crazing all over, but no cracks.

You may already have this info but...this is the 2nd mark for O.P. Co. It is dated from 1873-1885. Not worth a ton but...$3 what a find!
Search Syracuse China on Wikipedia for dating history. Also Restauarant Ware Collectors Network. O.P. Co/Syracuse China were really good about marking their work and the dates are pretty easy to find on these two sites.
When you are tired of it, let me know! :>)
