WW1 mess kits provided a large canvas for for soldiers and enterprising individuals to decorate as souvenirs for soldiers.
This particular example contains an Infantryman in helmet, the US Flag, and a nurse.
In addition the engraver has added Infantry crossed rifles and a pair of wooden shoes!
Unfortunately, the owner didn't engrave a name or unit. so the specifics of his wartime service have been lost.
Reproduction of these images in any form is not authorized.

What a pitty - all that work and no real identifying data - except we can be pretty sure he was infantry.
Wonderful! Thou art a dangerous collector, scott vez!
Thanks Chris-- it is ashame, but very typical of most trench art items.
Based on the inclusion of the nurse, it was also likely that he was wounded or sick at some point and required medical treatment.

Thanks again petey!

Could the wooden shoes be the signature of the artist/engraver?
Interesting thought walksoftly! I really don't know on this one.

It is just a thought, every thing else is related to WWI, but the Netherlands were neutral & suffered economically.
Thanks walksoftly-- I am glad that there are others out there with an interest in this as well!
