vintage bottle holder

I have this black dog (possibly bakelite) mounted on a round metal base. Dog measures about a foot. No markings. The person I got this from said it came from a family tavern and it was a bottle holder. I was wondering if it was some type of advertisment for a liquor company. Does anyone know anything about this item.
