I am not sure that these girls belong in this category, but could see no other. I bought these doll ornaments at a car boot sale a year or so ago! I have no idea about them - where they are from, what era they were made - nothing in fact! I just liked them! I love the way they are lying down and talking on the phone. I have included the underside of them in case that might be helpful. I bought a third figure with them, but I feel that the boy has an oriental feeling and does not belong with the two chatty females!! Thanks for stopping by!
Will include the boy in the next posting! Thank you in advance!
Thank you mustangtony!
My guess would be the 1920's early 30's. They have the 'Betty Boop' googly eyes, and the phone receivers are GIANT, like back then! Probably Japan based on the colors & glaze type. Too cute!
Thank you Celiene for your comments on the 'Betty Boop' type figures! Will probably chase up Japanese thread. Thanks again!
Hi your little telephone girl has numbers on bottom that Germany or USA would use not Japan. They are high quality to many I have seen . I suspect USA since McKinley law that required countries importing to USA state country of origin on them . So although they do have a bit of Asian look I believe USA made but quality of Germany ? I will try to pin point it . These porcelain Telephone figures have been made for many years by many companies :-) Sweet as can be
This is what the Japan girls looked like and stammped Japan the quality is not near as good as yours . Yours appears much earlier than 50' sand google eyes have been used sine end of 1800' to present . These girls were meant for America market so if imported they have to show name China .Japan ect . Look real close all over for any imprinted country if none just by script type of numbers USA or German . In 1920 a telephone had not been invented like the ones they are holding :-) Are they salt and pepper shakers I see holes ?
Thank you Manikin, They are not salt and pepper, no holes! The one with 120 stamped on the bottom has an impressed mark next to it. I have have a close look at it - it appears to be two boxes, one on top of the other, the top one has a short line with a longer line underneath it, the second box (adjoined to the first) bear the number 37! That is it as regards marks, I can find nothing more on them. I thought the headgear was quite unusual, it may tell us more about the time they were made. Also, I only thought the other figure was of an oriental origin (the boy with a horn) posted separately, although bought as a trio! These girls only measure 2"x 2". Thank you once again for all of your advice, I will chase it up!!:-)
Well that helps that it is marked so could be import can you get a photo of mark . I am leaning german made then . The early Chinese pieces were high quality but not generally Japan. More often lower painting quality . Yours has very fine facial painting like Germans did and Chinese but Chinese would not use the script numbers like yours nor Japan . If numbered would be in their language and clearly state Japan in English beside the mark . Interesting hoping maybe a pottery expert will come on board . Possible English made or Italy also .
Thank you once again Manakin! Will try to get a photo of impressed mark tomorrow in daylight! Very much appreciate your input!!:-)
Thank you Bellin!
I am going to chance my mind the eyes are very much in the style Japan used so I can't rule them out as I see this 2nd time around :-)))
Thank you once again Manikin, as I am still trying to find out about them - I love them!!
