I got this years ago from Naomi on Polk St in San Francisco. He told me at the time that it was made by the owner of Trader Vic's or something like that. i wrote the story down on a piece of paper and put it inside the hole in the foot, but i've never been able to get it out to read it.

This fella is delightful! Haven't seen one like this. Have you had any luck verifying the story of its creation?

i don't doubt naomi's word - he's got a very good reputation for knowing what he's talking about. but no, i can't find anything about it. if anyone knows, i'd love to find out more about it.

Didn't mean to cast doubt upon this beautiful piece! Just thought that it would be nice to have that in writing. Beautiful.

no problem mikko - i didn't take it as that at all. i do have it in writing - inside the bear's foot! i just can't get it out of him. maybe i'll need to break it to get that darn piece of paper...

      haha!

Talk nice to the bear, tell him to shake a leg.
I'm sure he would love to get rid of that paper that's had him bunged up all these years.

thank you pawis. i think so too and have lived w/ it in primary locations of my home for around 20 years now.

actually, my home is so tiny that ALL locations are primary by default. even the closets.

I think this was made by L&V Ceram in Marseilles, France in 1930. Not sure why it's not stamped L&V, though? They produced them in Cyan or White. And there are about 6 different shapes and sizes. Value $150-$250. Hope this helps. Marc

I just noticed it does have markings on two of the feet. one is marked 'L' and the other is marked 'T-5'. any ideas?

I own a pair! My Grandmother had them and I thought she got them from Alaska. I can't believe that someone else has one too. I also have a large penguin.

Your bear was most certainly made by the Brayton Laguna Pottery of Laguna
Beach California in the 50s. I have a variety of bears sculptures (and other animals too) in this white crackle glaze, tho they also did blue crackle and matte black on their sculptures like this. The T-5 shape number gives it away! Enjoy. Rick

Thanks hotpots. i don't think that this is Brayton Laguna. maybe it was produced by them, but according to Naomi in San Francisco, it was made by Trader Vic [the man, not his famous company]. it doesn't resemble any of the Brayton Laguna pieces i've seen. ??
