Found this box at a thrift store. It is made out of wood with possibly brass around it. The plating is not glued, it is nailed on. The metal is not magnetic. There are square with pictures of different things associated with India engraved in them, possibly by hand. Not sure what it was originally used for. It says "Air India" on the side. The interior is covered with velvet and there are very few wear marks. It was a giveaway to Air India customers in the 1980s and designed to hold cassette tapes.

Looks like an 80's cassette holder -- just a guess...
    5. trgrubaugh trgrubaugh, 12 years ago
i would think more 8 trak. my old cassette holders were desinged for the tape to go in horizontally. but you may be right

Could also be a tisane box -- make your selection...more in line with the culture.

If it was used on a plane perhaps the wheels would be to slip in and out of a shelf for easier access, particularly if it was stored somewhere low. They have a lot of storage compartments they lock up on planes.

I worked for Air India from 1972 - 1988 and this box was one of our giveaways in the 80s and was designed to store cassettes.

Thank you for the information. It is a great item. Do you know about how many were made/given out? Do you know if it was made in India? Thank you again

All the Air India giveaways originated in India. I am in the UK and was working in the Birmingham Airport office at the time and if I remember correctly, we had about 10 boxes to give away.
      Best regards

      Kathy
