    Sandpiper
    (24 items)

Came across this while in a family storage barn. Supposedly belonged to one of my family way back when. Not really sure of its history. It has a piece missing just below the thinner end that happend before it came into my possession.

Also missing the bottom plug if it is a powder horn. Wish I had it so I could make a plug for you as it has character.

Thanks for the loves. No plug that I know of or found with it. It's been hanging on my wall for years now. Is an interesting conversation starter.

I can't see but a few holes to hold a plug in, so it may be a horn(blowing type). Usually a powder horn would have tacks (usually brass) about every 2 cm around the base & the plug would usually be made watertight with maybe tarred calking.
Nice aged colour. Gave mine to the musee' some yrs ago & kind of regret it. Well more people will appreciate if I hope.

Oh, PS. You might want to rub it down heavily with a non-petrol based oil as they will eventually dry & peel. When they peel, it is in thick layers as it is the same materiel as you finger nails.

I just had a look and it does indeed have pins around the large opening, their flush to the outside, barely noticed them but you can feel them sticking out inside slightly. Not sure if their brass or not, could be. I don't think the cam would show them too well.

Well, you have the gist of how to preserve it.
