I purchased this sofa at a local thrift store. I absolutely fell in love with the intricate carving that goes all the way around on the frame. It was covered in that God-awful maroon velvet, which I have since removed. Now it sits (naked) until I have the space to work on it. I do not know how old it is or even how to go about finding out. I beleive in its original state, it DID NOT have the separate cushions. Im hoping to restain the frame as it appears to not be damaged.

Itsn't it gorgeous? Do you think I'm right about the fact that the cushions do not seem original to the style? I wish I knew what year I was looking at.

I love that antique sofa also! Those 3 cushions have been added later. They are even too long on the front. It probably had a solid piece all across the seat. Good luck with redoing it, and it will be worth the time and money. Please post us a picture after your finished.

My thoughts exactly debbiepike54. I plan to tackle it after the holidaze.

It is difficult for me to say precisely how old it is as I am obviously unable to examine it (although better photos might help?); but stylistically it is Rococo Revival, either French or American, most likely from the second half of the 19th century. It's probably walnut, and you're all quite right, those cushions are absurd and not original. (I hate to tell you though, but that deeply coloured velvet fits the period of the piece; other choices include dark green, crimson, or gold, although I've seen them upholstered in lighter, more modern colours and they look great.)

That will really be a beautiful sofa, and the walnut is a very hard durable wood that holds up a long time. I can't help but wonder if it had been stored because it looks like dust has been on it and the back tufting a long time. I would buy one if it showed up in our local thrift store and I have seen some old ones come in but none I could live without. It's def...very old !

Thank you for your input, Jezzer!!I hope these pics help. My guess was 1800s. A dark green velvet would look stunning. Ms. debbiepike54, I paid $10 for it!!! They were gonna throw it on the trash truck because it was too dirty. Can you believe it?

I can't believe people would throw something like this away. Granted it will cost much to restore the fabric, but you can do the wood part yourself. I have taken many pieces that needed refinishing and did it with a lot of elbow grease you know. Then the relatives come over and see it, and say,,,I WANT that now, I had no idea it looked like that !! Be a proud owner of REAL wood..and an antique to boot.

I believe I can do the fabric on this piece myself.

I have a piece of furniture very close to the one you have. ( chair and sofa) Yes it does have one full cushion. I bought it at an auction and had it redone in a wine colored embossed fabric and it looks beautiful. It is in excellent condition. I am thinking of selling it now as I am changing my furniture decor. When I was getting quotes for the upholstering one person said it would be worth $3000-$4000 after refinishing it. Does anyone know of this is true?

Phil you need to buy this one lol the back is not original. I have taken off most of the fabric. It has been covered at least three times. I've tried selling it for $150 as is. I haven't had time to attempt the upolstering
