Found this last weekend at a small estate sale, it's not something I normally would not buy, but the elderly couple was so cute I couldn't help it. All she could remember was it was her mothers and it was old. But that was that. Does anyone know this cut glass pattern? I am assuming it is American. It's 6 1/2" tall and 6 1/4" at its widest. Thanks!
appears to be a pressed glass punch bowl stand; the first pic is upside down. Maybe Imperial Glass but not certain at this point. Some folks repurpose these as vases when used as pictured.
Thanks TallCakes! Love your glass show and tells!
Original catalogs from the teens reveal that this particular base was sold by Imperial with different bowls. Some were for punch, others were for fruit. The punch bowls were deeper. One of the bowls that was sold with it is now called "Long Hobstar" by collectors. Some of these also come in carnival colors.
The bases were designed so that they could be inverted and used as vases or compotes when the complete set was not in use. Mention is made of this in period sources, so this is not a modern notion.
Cool! Thanks Paul for all the info! I wonder if they still have the bowl? When they have their next sale I will have to ask. :-)
