A lesson taught with this one.

This tall trumpet vase approx..9 inches/23cm.. was described as "in perfect condition", the photos didn't show the flaws and what very little they did I put down to reflection.

A lot of the iridescence has been rubbed off, inside and outside of the rim and the outsides of the folds.

Still a lovely vase but! back of the shelf job, showing it's best side! ....:-)

Inky, have you tried soaking it in oxyclean? Irridescence doesn't generally "rub off" I've seen some amazing transformations in iridescent glass with a good solid soak.

Greatsnowyowl... this really does look like it has been rubbed or scratched off with too much enthusiastic cleaning over the years! is it possible at all that it could be, hopefully not, I will get some oxyclean and try soaking it as you suggested, thanks so much!...:-)

czechman... lol! NO! I don't have any of ether oxy clean or denture cleaner handy, but1 I will get some for sure and try them.. thank you also very much!...:-)

It would take some really harsh treatment for that to happen. I am always amazed at people who don't clean their iridescent glass before selling. I actually use a mild dish soap but I remember people telling me that oxyclean is the bomb and there are times I know it could have gotten cleaner than I managed to get it. I have some somewhere but I never can find it. you might want a second opinion on oxyclean.. I do think it's ok but since I don't use it myself normally...
      :)

I remember a few months back I got a dark Harrach vase that you could ALMOST see a hint of iridescence in when I got it. after a good long soak in dish soap and gentle scrubbing it was iridescent..

oh NM there already was a second opinion on the oxyclean. Sorry I didn't see you weigh in Gary :)

Greatsnowyowl... I am this minute going to do that.. and hopefully it will work, but if I look carefully at it you can actually see where it looks like scratch marks where the iridescent starts and finishes as if it has worn a way overtime, but! I am hoping that you and czechman are right and I can get it back, thank you once again for your help and advice!...:-)

Is the iridescence it the glass or has it been applied over the top..thank you ..:-)
    9. Greatsnowyowl Greatsnowyowl, 12 years ago
Iridescence is made by a fume of heavy metals fumed to the glass (basically) it's generally pretty permanent and solid. it can be abused off in severe cases... but it's pretty hard to do.

hi inky -- i have had good luck with oxiclean on glass also -- oxiclean is great but lesson learned is rinse very well before going to another cleaning agent or detergent -- oxiclean with a poorly rinsed item can permanently turn it yellow especially when going to clorax as a next step -- have a great day
