Not much different then two tin cans and a string. This mechanical telephone was invented by William Watts on June 3, 1879 and was assigned to the Watts Telephone Co of Louisville, Ky. The box telephone is made of tin with a sheep skin diaphragm. These telephones were also called Acoustic Telephones or String Telephones.
