I believe these newspapers were printed in New York. They were delivered by US mail. There is an American flag in the upper right corner of the front page and it states that this is a fully American newspaper in the German language.
Very interesting items. We see a lot of WWII-era newspapers at auction but haven't run across a German-language paper. Would be very interested in knowing if these were reporting U.S. news?
Yes, it was all US news. War reports, economy, celebrity stories, pretty typical American newspaper, but printed in German. I did a little more research after I posted this and I was wrong about it being published in New York it was actually published in Cleveland, Ohio. Seeing stories about celebrities like Roy Rogers with German captions is kind of odd.
Very odd...and cool! I have a theory, just a theory. Maybe it was distributed to less hostile parts of Germany to spread less hostile feelings towards the allied forces....thinking that if they knew more about the "foreign invaders", it would help. Just a theory. What are the dates? I do know that in the late 40's they did have a lot of german citizens working on American bases in Germany, still do. They were probably curious.
