I bought this Japanese Noh Mask at online auction for $12. I was only bidder, I called my sons mother for information since she is Japanese. I also looked at internet, and saw new Noh mask of "Tobide" a demon, for over $500.! The inside says sho-wa or date. I looked up emperor dating system on internet and it was 1986, so it is 25 yr. old, and perfect condition. Noh musicals and plays started in the 14th century. Now the second mask, no one bid on this mask either, It is ceramic with I believe straw hair, and straw rope coming through ears and nose with five dolls ceramic with straw? for feet, it seems like a headhunter, from some island. I thought they made all there mask out of wood but times are changing. I like the way one eye goes in a different direction than the other. They are on my wall next to each other, I think they are friends!
