I was detecting a colonial site were I found
Colonial coins a USA button and this artifact . At first I thought it was a coin but futher examination it appeared to be either a die or a seal. It is French and dates 1799. Could it have been used to conterfiet a French coin? It is cast and smooth on the back, can anyone help me Identify this artifact?

Perhaps for a wax seal? Those were usually well preserved because of the oils if used any at all.

Get some seal wax and make a positive impression of the die, then you should be able to ferret out more details for attribution.
