Hello... First of all let me thank you in advance for your time to look at this item I have. I bought this Skilsaw at a yard sale in SaltLake City about 1o years ago. I have done carptentry work my whole life so i thought it was kind of cool. And when the woman i bought it from plugged it in and ran strong, i couldn't believe it, i actually cut a 2x4 with it ! The saw doesn't have a model plate on it, not sure if it ever did. And there are no I.D. markings anywhere on the saw. But i have to assume it is a Skilsaw. The can it is in was made my the Erie Can Co. from Chicago Ill. The case is free from rust and the hindges are in good shape, the leather handle if firm, but the leather is off on one side. The saw came with the "T" socket that removes the blade, and makes cutting adjustments on the saw. A tube of Skil lube was also in the case.the sawblade is sharp, but the teeth are irregular from re-shapening i believe, or blade was hand cut. The blade guard is attached with a pin and cotter pin. The powercord looks original and is free from cracks or frays. I wasn't sure how old it is, but i have found a Skilsaw model "J" in an old H.Channon cat. from April 1930, but there are a few differences. On the model J skilsaw it was made with a 6" blade and this on I have is only 51/4 " and the saw I have has a toggle switich start {what a man killer huh} and i believe the model J has a trigger start. anyway, any info you may have about this saw would be great!
You could very well have a Model E saw, which would have been the first saw under the Skilsaw name. I would contact the company and email them a photo, I doubt if they even have an example this old.

You are welcome and good luck gathering your information. Over the years I have sold a number of items back to the original manufacture. They will use it for lobby display or museum if they have one.
I like your saw I've been a carpenter for forty years myself and I just got a skil wormdrive from a friend in chicago .Its a model 67 51/4 in the original box, nice cord, knicked up a bit and a new plug , other than that doesn't appear to have been used much. I was surprised to see this didn't even know they made such a thing. If anyone has an idea what the possible years of manufacturing could be I would love to know. The serial number on the nameplate is a 180005. Oh buy the way it seems to run out just fine and has several vintage blades in the box. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Dave, the model 67 was manufactured over a 10 year span, 1946 until 1956.
In 1978 I purchased a skillsaw brand 16 inch radial arm saw mounted on a 2 wheel trailer. The plate on the motor says the model # is 315 and the serial # is 950584. It also says it was made by skillsaw, inc. at Chicago . The motor is round and runs on 220 power. As a framing contractor I have built many a home useing this saw. the saw runs ... well... like new I had no problem with it thru all these years . Of course it does not meet todays o.s.h.a. requirements but since I am retired I really dont want to junk it. Who knows maybe it is worth a little something. Any Ideas out there?

I have a model J Skil Saw. Has nameplate, and paperwork in the box. However I can't find any info? The paperwork is marked 1929. When was Model J manufactered and how does it's history fit into the Model E and 77? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Derek...Does your model J working, in a case ?
Derek, The skilsaw model J was manufactured before the model E. No thought was given to tilt the blade, only cut depth, strictly a simple cut-off saw. They even produced them with a toggle start,if you have ever seen the patent drawings, same toggle start in the same place on the saw handle. I'd have to quess not a whole lot of these were made. not many left, and even fewer that are stll around and are in working orded. If you have a pic or what u have, could you send a pic?
I have a SKILSAW Model 77 Serial # 145523 Type 2 is on the nameplate. Just pulled it out and still runs. I too was trying to find info on it. I am 64 years old my father passed away at age 51 and he owned the saw. I don't know if he bought it new or used. He was in the CB's in the 40's I know it has to be 75+ years old.
I'm a little late to the game, but yes Kurt, you have a Model "J," Erie Can Company and all. There was an overlap with the Model "J" and Mode "E," so later Model "J's" have a trigger like the Model "E," however the saw castings of the two models are quite different. (Think, using on the shelf, older made parts, mixed with new, like Detroit use to do). The first production Skilsaws were produced in 1928, and the toggle switch start is nearly identical to the patent drawings of the inventor, Edmond Michel.
I am an occasional Professor & General Contractor, working on a history of the Wormdrive, so I will look into the questions from all the other posters. Also, if any of you have photos or information, please let me know.

No info on that man killer but Ive worked carpentry many years and growing up using those crappy skilsaws that have the motor on the left and view of blade on the right and the handle in front so you have to pull when you cut instead of push!! After using that as a kid and being introduced to the wormdrive skilsaw I fell in love with it. Now this old wormdrive looks awesome a carpenters piece of art. Luv it!!!!!!!!!!
I have a skil model R. 12" blade, volts 110 DC or AC up to 60 cycles, 20 amps, single phase. made in chicago, I tried to find parts, skil in denver said they never made a model R. they did. anyone know anything about this saw? Thanks

I have the same exact saw, it is a model W.
I don't known much else about but it is very rare.
I am trying to find out more information on my Skilsaw model 77 that I believe is the first generation. I am looking for a replacement switch. Changing the old chord required unsoldering the wires from their terminals. Now the terminal rivets are loose and I'm afraid they will touch each other and short out.

I have a model J with the toggle switch. I recently found it when cleaning out my basement. I appreciate the information posted by Professor Mike. My saw has the name plate and says it is an 8 amp and has a serial number 3816. This saw still runs very strong with an impressive amount of torque and it appears to have a very old blade in it as well, also 5 1/4'. It is missing the lower blade guard. It appears to have the original ppower cord although it has been repaired in one spot with old cloth electrical take. I am interested in selling to a collector and would appreciate some idea of the value of what I have.

Upon closer inspection, my model J Skill Saw is a 6 amp, not 8 amp as previously stated. The toggle switch is also spring loaded. I can also see no place where a handle would have been mounted over the blade, as I have seen on other similar saws. There is both a forward and rear adjustment for blade height.
