hi my names chris i am new to the site and like the idea of show and telling. this is one of my most recent finds. a lovely pair of vintage trident 20 carat spectacles with a love letter insde. the addressee is a mr E. Singleton on-board the HMS aurora dated october 1944 , from my reasearch aroudn this time the HMS Aurora was on duty in several missions including the greek civil war at the end of its reign before this there are several other important missions she took part in along side other naval ships. the missions was completed adequatley and the HMS Aurora in 1948 was commisioned to china for a some, who later changed her name.
the exciting part of this find for me is the bolton lancs post mark the letter its self and the spectacles have an unusual pattern cut into the edge of the spectacle lense not really visable from the picture but will try my best to get enhanced picture as they are beautiful like petals of a flower or the edge of a lovley cut linen with lovely art deco kind of arabic symbols along the side and across the bridge wich is truly amazing as i have seen some really good art deco artists of the period and they seem to resemble some of the architeture style art of the early deco mid deco period so it leads me to think that these were maybe a custom pair or a specific designer had made these hence the cup cake perferation spectacle edge design and deco pattern design around the glasses., i havent seen much or found much of these style of glasses before or during my search over last few days and find them quite rare...i have researched a little into miss I.Riding and have her address on the letter so have managed to trace her parents and the date and place miss I.Riding was baptiseds , i am trying to find E.Singleton but am having difficulty doing so. the letter on its own is quite nice on its own and the spectacles even more so how-ever as i found these as a pair i am more interested in them as a whole and would love to find a picture of miss .riding hopefully wearing these glasses......and to find out if mr.singleton made it home alive as the thought that miss riding has the letter leads to beleive he may OR may not and this is the reason why miss riding kept it close to her as a keep sake...also i would like to find out if miss changed to mrs at all and if they ever had children or married or if miss riding or mr singleton ever married each other or some one else. hope somebody finds this interesting and enjoy any feedback commenst or points of interest regarding this..also i am going to be show and telling my world war 1 consciencious objector collection of mr Tom Mann mrs Elsie Harker and Mr Bailey harker wich is about 400 letters long stretching from 1905 to the late 70's the collection includes some really interesting note books poems and much more considering mr Tom Mann helped or more or less single handedly created the trade union and was at the fore front of a lot of political movemenst through the late 1800's all the way through his life and bailey who the collection is based on is a hero to all as from what i beleive he was a religious man and the way he was treated for his beleifs has opened my eyes up to a lto of things as a man of god he didnt beleive in fighting or war or killing or any kind of mistreating of his neighbours yet he was punished mentally physically and morally as he was forced to go to war forced to go to prison if he didnt do as he was told irrelivant of his beleifs and forced to go to work camps as punishment. the collection includes personal letters from Tom mann as he was married to Baileys sister elsie who also was a very significant figure in the labour movement along side her husband Tom Mann as she was part of duo or trio who formed the i.L.P ( THE INDEPENDANT LABOUR PARTY) the amount of infornmation and insight in to another persons personal fight towards cuase of the rights of people is amazing as bailey and tom or unsung heroes who did everything for us and others and it was all selfless acts of bravery and courage and also common sense to have a right to be heard and Tom on whole was heard and is very very well respected from the trade union side of things and internationlaly as he helped sweden australia and other countries in teh process and even though he died a not so very rich man he died with honesty and god will. on the other hand bailey's story is a heart felt more so as he did everything in good faith that things will change and if anybody knows anybody who knows of any family around today who are related to these brave people i would like to say i am one of those who is trying to spread there word now and let them be heard all over again for the right of man and woman. a truth into the first world war which is un heard of today. and also to end the story of tom his self is massive one for his impact on our working life but to find he died before the war ended really upsets me as i feel he never go to see them through as he deserved to after all he did for those involved in battle and those at home aswell.
hope you enjoy reading about this and will upload the bailey and tom man archive very soon as there is so much to document i dont know where to start and any feedback or interest will be gratly appreciated.
