      Actually they were not armed by striking the top with the hand as described. You can see the safety lever in the article.

      I think you are right, Blunder. There were earlier grenades that required striking, and I think the author applied the old information to the then new 1915 #5 Mills bomb, which had the now familiar pull-the-pin-and-throw method.
