    I can't believe this book managed to survive all the storms since 1832 and thanks to Sandy its a big ole mess! So many, to many ouch!

      would guess about all that can be done is keeping the mold off -- perhaps storing it in a container with some desiccant

      i know mold is like the death howler of books -- sometime i place used dryer sheets between the pages of my old books -- seems to help and they smell nice!!!!! -- these little sheets also help keep the mosquitos away if you stick them in your pockets -- ok enough with susie homemaker here

      Drier sheets will contain chemicals that may yellow the pages. Acidic. Bad idea.
      Desiccants are okay to an extent, but if it goes down under 30% humidity the pages may become brittle, thus disintegrating.
