This chair was in my grandmother's house for as long as I can remember, and it was given to me by my mother as a wedding present. I know my Mom had it appraised at one time (over 30 yrs ago) with some other antique furniture that my grandmother had, but the appraisal has long since been misplaced and I have no idea what the value of it was at that time.
It has elaborate carvings on the top, bottom and arms. There is a face at the top, another at the bottom, and the armrests are carved as claws grasping a ball.
The seat is fabric (maybe not the original, not sure about that), and there are springs under the seat.
If anyone has ever seen one, or has one like it, I would appreciate any information you might be able to provide.
Must say that is one of the most unique chairs I have ever see. The face reminds me of an ogre. And the coolest part is that it looks like he is sitting in the chair! Look under the upholstery if you can and the joints that make up the seat, it could tell you a lot about the age. Perhaps there are some markings under there as well. Do you think it is hand carved? It is in such great shape. The more I look at it the more I love it. Keep me updated!
