Today I started to polish a small silver dish I picked up a few days ago for a dollar or so. Took me awhile, maybe 30 minutes of light polishing with cotton balls (3M Tarni Shield) to get the bottom polished. So as it cleans up I am noticing tiny little images everywhere. First I see a face, a small anchor, letters, lions, I start thinking I am hallucinating. I bring my jewelers loupe and the dish up to my wife and ask her to look around she sees lions anchors, etc. What is going on here?

I tried to get a few good pictures, to see what everyone thinks. Does anyone see the Lion Rampant in the second image? Is this the Glasgow Lion? It looks a little wrong to me.

Now, in the third picture I see a duty mark, an anchor to the left and the letter "O" above (You may need to zoom here). The last picture is the whole back and you can see letters stretched across among other things. Could this have been made of old coins???

Does anyone else see this stuff? Am I losing it? Maybe I need a break??

    Merry Christmas!

I see an antelope & a giraffe. Maybe we should swap "smokes". LOL . Ck. Hems, he has strange looking lions and maybe it's the same engraver? I think I see a part of what you are seeing but need to look closer. Send it to me & I'll give you my "expert" opinion. Not COD please.

Lion rampant always faces left. Which photo are you seeing it in? I'm not seeing anything that looks remotely like it. The marks wouldn't be all over the place, they would be right next to each other on a straight line

The lion would face to the right if crossing a street where people drive on the left side.

Lions and Anchors from the northeast of Massachusetts, i have some its either Towle or another silver company around here.
    8. filmnet filmnet, 12 years ago
I do not see any lions anchors, etc.

Actually the lions is the Brittish hallmark for sterling silver, and the anchor is their mark for Birmingham. Not Massachusetts, lol

I saw something just like this today. It is a salt & pepper dish no? That should explain the corrosion.
