Traveling through Central America, my wife and I stayed in a very nice guesthouse owned by an upstanding upper middle class couple.
The owner's brother came selling this watch complaining that it had Roman numerals and his wife didn't like it. I asked what he wanted for it and he said an X amount. I offered a slightly lower figure and it was settled.
Cartier is a difficult brand to trace in terms of serial numbers and year of manufacture; based on my own research I'd say it was made in the 1950s.
The movement is marked Cartier, 17 jewels and Swiss. Inside the case there are two numbers with 7 and 5 digits each.The wristband appears to be alligator and it has the Cartier logo on the buckle. It's well worn.
When i wind it it stays working in very perfect timing for about five days!
That style of tank watch became very popular in the mid '70s. I haven't really studied Cartier's tank history, so it could be older. But if authentic (and it probably is), that's a sapphire on the winder.
