May your piece was meant to create a pillow? Or is it a scarf?
I wonder if it is a design by F. Earl Christy?
There's a pillow on the net here:

A billhead on ebay gave as much info as anywhere:
Campbell, Metzger & Jacobson, Importer and Exporters, 932 - 938 Broadway, New York. Selling Agents for the Madeira Embroidery Company.
Campbell, Metzger & Jacobson manufactured textiles in New York City in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The company was founded by Jasper A. Campbell, David Arthur Metzger, and Charles A. Jacobson.
New York City artist F. Earl Christy (1882-1961) was a popular illustrator. The chromolithograph pillow cover is produced on cotton and linen cloth. The company Campbell, Metzger and Jacobson produced various promotional items, including your pillow, which depicts a charming pair of Princeton University students. Sports memorabilia is highly collectible -- especially so among devoted university alumni.
And yet another here with an ice skating theme:

WOW!
I excited to learn more. Love to save a bit of history.
I think it was meant to be possibly a pillow.
Picture doesn't do it justice. The colors have held up remarkably well.
"Come in the waters fine"
Check out these postcards.
One of them has the Come on in.....

World's Fair 1908?
Worlds fair was a guess : ) but on further research the background scene is probably Coney Island NY depicting the main tower and Ferris wheel and off to the left maybe West Bank light house in New York harbor.
The postcard is even the right year!
I did notice that most F Earl Christy thing had his signature although this certainly reflects his style.
I laugh who could actually swim in that!
