The painting is a 24x20 oil by David Pelbam. Since the artist just died in 2004 the value is work is still a big question. This painting is a little different from his other ones. As far as I have seen only his ship caption paintings have a pipe in them. The pipe in this one has way more detail than any other ones. It has 3 small chips on the left side of painting so im not sure what that does to value.

Heres a little information about David Pelbam. Born in 1932,died in 2004,lived in Rhode Island, only painted between 1965 and 1975, has about 4 different painting that were redone many times and every painting is the same man in different cloths and setting.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any information on it. Thank You

Signature looks right, I had one very much like this years back. I got 200.00 for it then. David painted the same guy in all his paintings, heres the kicker, the face is Davids!! Yep, he painted himself as different characters. Ship workers, Dock worker, fisherman so on...LOL Dave

I just purchased a similar piece at a yard sale. I have a gallery so I know it is an original oil on canvas. The signature matches exactly! Would love to find out more and contact interested buyers.

I recieved a David Pelbam painting not to long ago. signature is a match to the ones I found online. I have not found a pic. of this painting yet. I think I have a one of a kind. Do you have any suggestions of how to find out?

I have a Pelbram sea captain with a ship in the background. I purchased this pic in Yancey, France in the 80's in a local gift shop. I fell in love with this pic the moment I saw it because when you walk past the pic and back again his eyes follow you back and forth. Just amazing.

I bought a beach scene with a dune, ocean, grasses and a bird in air. There is a white picket fence. The scene is done in ivory and shades of green. The signature has a brown either D or P then it has elbam. Doesn't look like david's signature without the downward end stroke but the "elbam" sure looks like every signature I have seen. Does anyone know if he might have been experimenting with his signature or is this just someone else?

Hello all! I stumbled upon a David Pelbam painting at a local flea market for $5. As with many of the other descriptions, the painting is of the same old man with his haunting eyes, a navy blue andwhite captain's hat, wearing a dark blue or black jacket, with a brown shirt underneath. He is smoking a chocolate brown pipe that has a small plume of smoke rising from it. There are no other objects in the foreground or background, which is brownish in color.

I've found quite a bit of conflicting information online as to the actual worth of Pelbam originals, with folks indicating they are basically worthless while others indicate that they may be rather valuable. Can anyone provide a definitive answer on this topic?

Hi, I have a David Pelbam painting. It is the same old man, however, he wearing a clergy outfit with a black cap and a block of wood on his forhead. I wonder if it is a one of a kind since all the others were a sea captain. His signature only has his last name. Any comments would be appreciated.

I have 3 of his paintings I am wanting to sell, but I have no idea the right forum to sell them. They are of the old man at a table praying, and 2 smaller ones of the old man smoking a pipe. They are original signed and framed. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I have done a search and I know his paintings are having a resurgence and prices have gone up quite a bit. David Pelbam was well respected for his work, it was not as popular as some, but became increasingly popular due to the subject, and the eyes, and the way he captured emotion. Since his death in 2004 his work is highly collectible.

I agree Lisa. Also, he did not only paint from 1965-75 as I just purchased one of his paintings last night at an auction for $10 and it is dated '53. I'm not trying to correct anyone in this discussion, just trying to learn more about him as well. I believe this is the first painting I have seen w/a date. Also on verso there is some writing in pencil and a date of 11/13/53...I want to say there are about six peoples names as well I live in Ohio and the weather sucks right now, but once the sun comes out and I can go outside e/natural light and my magnifier, I'm going to cipher these names. Will post when I know.

I just received what I believe is a Pelbam painting. Stamped in the middle of the canvas is 122087. On the top on a strip of canvas is Rysdale Koster 3/24/77 Then Jake Kostin #108. This part is hard to read as it is in pencil. The frame is 12x16 and part of the sticker says antiqued in Mexico. The man in the picture is wearing a black hat with a red feather in a brown band. He has on a black suit jacket with a brown button down shirt. If any one can tell me any information I would appreciate it. Thanks

6 years ago I bought 3 of the four framed paintings (all different sizes) from a yard sale , I left the small one behind and should not have but the car was full of Pelee Island wine lol. The large one I have is beautiful.
