This letter sealer came from the Ashtabula, Ohio LS&MS Depot. The Ashtabula Bridge Disaster happened a mere 1000 ft. east of the Depot. The LS&MS bridge that spanned the Ashtabula River collapsed and 92 people perished in 1876
Going to leave us dangling eh? Do you know why all those people were on the bridge at once?
The bridge was longer than the train. However, one engine and tender managed to get accross to the western abutmentand it's name was Socrates. The other engine and tender was named Columbia and it rolled upside down and landed in the Ashtabula Gulf. I am involved with the production of a 2 hour long movie which depicts the story of the Ashtabula Bridge Disaster. The movie will air on PBS some time within the next year. If you wish more information on this, there is a web site, Engineering Tragedy.com
Oh, I failed connect train & train bridge.
