Close-ups of the ox. Body is composition, eyes are glass, horns are twigs. The horns are not 'damaged', although the twigs do appear broken. It was the style to use bits of twig for the horns, and there wasn't a slavish adherence to representing the natural form of the horn perfectly. This is an odd characteristic of early artisanal German nativities. While the animals' bodies might be modeled in a highly detailed, naturalistic manner, the ox horns are but broken or cut twigs.
