Hello, I am answering from Japan. I'm not Japanese though so my kanji (Chinese character) reading isn't that of a native speaker. The Japanese Post puts out beautiful limited edition commemorative stamps, as well as, those for general mass sales. I've been collecting contemporary Japanese stamps for nearly 35 years and there are some in these photos that I haven't seen before.
At the top far right corner, a stamp from the city of Nagoya commemorates the "sachi", a mythical fish-like creature and symbol of the city. Golden sachi decorate the city's castle.
You can see the date of issue on many of these stamps with several from the 1950s.
At the bottom of the second row on the right is a very attractive "beautiful woman" from 1958. A "beautiful woman" stamp image comes from old woodblock images and a new image is issued about once a year, I think.
On the far left, the stamp with a large 5 is probably a stamp commemorating the New Year -- which is a more important holiday in Japan than Christmas. New Year stamps are issued each year to either attach to New Year postcards or given as prizes in the annual post office New Year card lottery. Next to it, is an attactive stamps with 2 wooden kokeshi ningyo dolls.
If the pen pal likes and collects stamps these are some attractive ones to keep and enjoy. They aren't really worth much in monetary value yet, I'd imagine.
At the top of the first row, 2nd to the right, is stamp issued for "international letter writing week". Usually those stamps feature an image from an old woodblock print.
Only a few of these stamps, such as the ones with the Akita dog and the wild ducks were non-comemorative stamps.
Hello dusting:
Thank you for taking the time to describe these beautiful stamp's for me. I love the Look of them and appreciate the information. Did you see the other items that I posted from the Pen pal letters from Bambi? Would there be anyway to find this, at that time, Young girl to let her know that I have discovered her letters after all these years.I would love to get these back to her if possible. Thank you again dusting for everything.
