I had these lamps since 1991, they were giving to me by an elderly woman from Russsia. She explained that they were from Czechoslovakia, and they would be very valuable some day. I never doubted it, but never did any research on the lamps, until recent. I was thrown off by the tag MARBRO, a lamp company in Los Angeles, that imported hand crafted glass from places like Italy and other far away places.
Marbro sold their products mainly through interior designers and a few upscale furniture stores. You would not find a Marbro product in a chain furniture store or discount store. Most of the products were built to order, and a typical order from a designer or retailer took between 75 and 90 days to complete.
So in 1991, I was a mover working for Mayflower out of Pasadena, CA. and on this day, we were moving an elderly lady who lived alone in Arcadia, Ca. She was very pleasant and very pleased with our work, that she tipped me with these two pink lamps, outside of $40 cash. It was customary that a shipper would eliminate clutter or offer peices of furniture as a token of their appreciation, and as a mover I turned down absolutely nothing. She had a heavy Russian accent I assumed, but she was very clear on telling me, That these were special lamps from Czechoslovakia, they were different in fact, that I have had estimates ranging from $3,500US to $4,800US. today.
Although I have not found a place in my home for these hand crafted beauties, they have had a long safe haven in my garage for over 20 years. Besides the beauty, this has been my largest tip so far in my 46 years of life. How do you say thank you in Russian?
