This is another item that I got about 20 years ago at an antique shop for 2.00. It is very heavy; stoneware maybe? It has a very unusual glaze that appears to be carved. There is a back stamp on it, but it is faint and I can't make it out. Any information would be greatly appreciated. It measures 2 3/4 deep and 7 1/4 tall.
It's very beautiful!
I'd say that mark is Japanese or Chinese.

I'd go for Japanese. At a guess, because the marks are not clear, I'd suggest Arita.
Aoki?
Let's see what the others say!
Very attractive piece, are you sure its as old as A&C though?
Hi Stillwater,
Not positive, but the use of poppies and the heavy clay, a salt fired type glaze and a semi curvilinear/organic whiplash design to the stem all lead me to suspect that it is pre art deco and most likely A&C. I thought about the pre-Ralphelites though. I would be able to id it if the back stamp were more clear. I have never seen another like it. Any ideas on the time frame? Thanks!
I think its too stylized and abstract for the turn of the century, that wasn't really popular until the 1960's and 70's, which is my guess.
Does the stamp look like oriental characters?
Really can't tell what the back stamp is; way too faint.
STUNNING!!!
