    (73 items)

Today January 10, 2013 was my YAHOOOOOOOOOO Day – so here is the story. I purchased this ring September 21, 2012 on Ebay. It arrived September 26, along with five other packages. As I was logging them in, Ted came in and said if you want to go to Freddie Meyers for groceries -- lets go. Being a typical female and sometimes hiding my purchases – although there really is no need to do this – just many years of habit – I quickly scurried around the house thinking where can I put this beautiful ring until I get back to take my time to woogle, google and fondle this lovely item. Went through five different scenarios – put it in the china cabinet – no that’s no good – too many places to get lost – put it on the table – no bad idea – what if a burglar walked in – put it under the table – out of sight – ya so out of sight I would probably even forget it – another bad idea – well this went on for five to ten minutes – the Explorers in the drive warming up - - hurry hurry hurry. Put it in my pocket – take it with you – ah perhaps. Well when we got back – no ring – not in any of the places I had so carefully thought might work. Maybe I did put it in my pocket and it fell out. Oh no surely I could not have been that stupid!!!!!! Well as the months pasted I’d say my prayers cross my body – fall on my knees, promise always to be a good girl if the higher spirits would just bring it back – every morning at Fred’s for coffee I would suspiciously eye every female’s hand – could she have found it in the parking lot or did she get an early Christmas gift from her lover.
Well I resigned myself that she was a goner and I deserved it for being so silly. Copied her description off ebay and pics and placed her into a folder on my computer. Would force myself to look at her every morning – just to keep the lesson learned fresh in my head. Never said a word to anyone – she was my little secret of vanity and an ego out of control.
Guess what!!! Today I was getting a package ready to ship to my Mom for her 90th birthday – let's see need tape, a card – wonder if I have a special card for her in my stockpile – uhmmmm were is the dang stockpile anyway – I move things around a lot – need to quit that as I grow older CRS is getting stronger. As I went looking for the stockpile – there was the ring – tucked away in my desk with all the hidden drawers. I was ecstatic – of course now this means I have to be good girl for a very long time as that was the promised made. Fessed up to Ted over our coffee at Fred’s we both had a good laugh.
This is the Information posted on the listing of the ring:
I purchased this ring in an antique shop in Vicksburg, TN in 1964. At that time, the dealer told me she had found it in Castle, Germany soon after WWII. I have the original box—it is a velvet lined paper box, with a goldsmith’s label, “Ernst Luz.”
The ring is approximately size 6 ¾. The detail on the sculpted face is remarkable. So many cameos do not have these lovely facial features. Her hair is caught in a bun at the back of the neck, and there are feathers in the hair in the Edwardian style. The simple setting is beautifully made and marked 14K. Stamped 585 inside the band.
Question for the members – does anyone have any information on Ernst Luz – have searched the net, jewelers and library to no avail – your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dear eppson233, What an interesting story and all people have the same little habits I know again. I speak German and I looked for you at Google. The only thing I can give you is the email adress of the tourist information of the city of Esslingen. Perhaps if you could mail them and ask what you want to know. This information certainly speaks English. The email adress is: info@esslingen-tourist.de
Of there is anybody who can help you they must be the way! Succes!
Please let me know if you get any information please.

Ernst Luz is not written in a good way. The German has a special letter of the sz namely : Ernst Lu?
    5. Agram.m Agram.m, 12 years ago
The site don't take this letter but in English written it is a sz instead of z.

thanks agram -- had looked at the esslingen site several months ago -- but had not thought to write a letter -- also tried to use the NASA maps to search for the address -- no luck there either -- thanks will try and write to the esslingen site -- hoping one of the collectorsweekly members might be familiar with the address

if i understand correctly should the last name be spelled Lusz????
    7. Agram.m Agram.m, 12 years ago
große in this word you can see the letter for sz together.

To my understanding, I was told that most Cameo's came from Italy and that usually like the Antique Watches were exported into different Countries like either the US. That the boxes that came with the Vintage/Antique pieces with there fancy Antique boxes are the Jewelry Store that sold them. Not the original origin of the piece. So like "Claydon Jewelers" can sell an Antique Ring and place that into there own Store Box with there Logo and Name stamped on the inside silk top lining. I maybe wrong ..but my thoughts are that its the jewelry store in Germany that sold the ring in there Logo ring box.

Moonstonelover21, your story could be right!
    10. epson233 epson233, 12 years ago
      thanks sean for the loves

agram and moonstonelover21 -- i totally agree that the box was probably the address of the jeweler and not the engraver/shell cutter -- trying to locate info on the address and jewelry store is going nowhere at this time --

this is what i know -- it is carved from the horned helmet conch shell so named horn as it was used by early civilizations and continues today in some parts of the world to sound warnings and messages -- still used by the coast guard today for its loud sound produced --

wikipedia offers the following information on the horned helmet conch (cassis cornuta)

"Cassis cornuta -- common name the horned helmet, is a species of extremely large sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Cassidae, the helmet shells and their allies
Description -- The length of the shell varies between 50 mm and 410 mm. It is the largest of all helmet shells. It has a very solid, heavy, rotund shell with large, horn-like knobs and a wide, flat base. The shell has a dorsally pale orange colour, its base vivid orange, faintly marked with white and brown.[1]
Habitat -- This large sea snail is found on sand and coral rubble, often around reefs.
Distribution -- This species occurs in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, off the southern African coast from northern KwaZulu-Natal and from Mozambique,[2] as well as in the Pacific Ocean.
Relevance to Humans -- The shell of Cassis cornuta is a very popular collector's item. In some places the snail is hunted for meat and is traditionally roasted in the shell over fire. Because of both of these factors, humans are a major enemy, and the species is now at risk in many places. However worldwide it not listed in the Red List. Because this snail hunts the Crown-of-thorns starfish, which feed on corals, Cassis cornuta has been put under strict protection in Queensland."

the band and setting is 14K gold -- the carving has great deal -- ergo someone really new his/her trade -- the shell could have come from indian ocean, africa, hawaii -- these little buggers are widespread

but what is interesting is it is -- the ring band is stamped 585 -- that one has me stumped -- not sure what country uses that numerical series as an identification for gold or even if that is in reference to gold and this is what i am hoping is one of our members can shed some light on this for me -- as i might have another avenue to research

in regards to where it could have been carved or my whom is also a wide array of choices as with the conch and were it may have been captured-- the manfacture of shell cameos was for sometime confined to Italy in the 1700 to 1800s since this time they were carved just about anywhere france, holland, the orient, india etc
(resource: -- Nineteenth Century Cameos" by Michael Rowan -- this is another interesting sidebar -- this book is out of print and currently goes for a used copy at over $200 to $900 for new -- glad i purchased mine several years ago when they were still in print

thanking all who are trying to assist with this one and all comments or thoughts are very much appreciated as i know your time is valuable

I completely do the same thing! My hubby and I cleaned up the garage this summer and he found a ton of my "hidden treasures". We had a chat and I participated in a flea market that fall. (Posted about it). We are now agreed that I can save any vintage goodness that I come across but need to purge periodically.
Now I have no guilt to swoop up what I want. : )))

The 585 mark is used in Italy but also in some other European countries, e.g. Russia. Your cameo is probably Italian.
    15. Agram.m Agram.m, 12 years ago
Indeed davyd286 you are right also in my (European) country The Netherlands.
