I think this is a hood ornament but have not been able to identify it using any web or image search. Does anyone know what this is? If not a hood ornament, what else could it be?

Just did a quick search and came up with this info:
The first logo of the Mercury brand was its namesake, the Roman god Mercury. The side profile of his head, complete with the signature bowl hat with wings was used during the early years.
I searched mercury hood ornament.
I had also done a search on mercury hood ornament. I was hoping to find a picture that matched the item I have. I have found similar looking ornaments, some had arched wings, some only the head but not the 'bust' look, some only chrome (not two-toned), etc. I have not been able to find a match. Other individuals have indicated that they also believe it is an early (WW II years) ornament but so far no matches. Thank you for your input. I will redo my search using Mercury Hood Ornament to see if I missed something. I appreciate your help.
Phil can probably help,he will see this soon I'm sure!
Thank you very much for the information. I did not buy this piece - it was part of a friend's collection of items whom has since passed away. His son asked me to research this item to find out something about it. And so I have. I will assume the item to be a reproduction with no value except for the value to the son (since it was his Dad's). Thanks again - I very much appreciate your help.

I have one more question for you if you have the time. You indicated that a lot of authentic American pieces had numbers on them which indicates an original piece. I know the picture I provided does not show it but there are 4 letters underneath the item. Under the washer on the bottom the letter 'FMC' appear towards the hole and an 'A' appears toward the back. Do these letters have any significance?
Thanks - Daryl
Well folks, I have exhausted all of the searches that I came think of and have come up with nothing. So if no one has another idea for me to check out, I am going to abandon the search for a match to this item. Thanks so much for all of your inputs and suggestions. Although I have not found this item, I have learned alot over the past 3 months.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate your thoughts and will consider selling it at some point. But for now, I believe I will keep it and appreciate it for what it is.
