M1840 NCO (non comissioned officer-- Sergeants) Sword.

These are fairly common, but Roby is a desirable maker and the 1862 date is good.

This originally came with a scabbord.

      Scabbard!

Made of leather, so many didn't survive. These are more commonly found w/o the scabbard than say a cavalry saber which has a metal scabbard.

Yeah if you look at th end of it you can see I leave it on. I'm guessing it is only part of it.

OK-- didn't see that. It is the scabbard tip.

Just checked my sources and Roby contracted for 12,500 of these. "F.S.S." is the US inspectors mark and stands for Frederic S. Strong.

Sure am glad you came up with that scott. At first glance, I was thinking musicians sword but then noticed the "butterfly" on the guard.

I was actually told it was a Musicians sword a while ago I think. I looked one up and it does look like it. What Butterfly?

Today has been F.U. because of painting where modem is. This is the last time I'm going to type this out! Scott has it right I'm sure. The "butterfly" I refer to is the flattish overlapping ovals in the hand guard next to the blade. I had forgotten totally about there being an NCO dress sword but after his post, a cloudy memory was telling me scott was right. Just don't remember them going back that far. I have a lot of cloudy memory & friends have pointed it out to me. Of course I don't remember who they are so maybe they were strangers who don't know what they are talking about.
