has been in family at least 30 years- very heavy-bronze-no markings-hand resting on instrument and foot is loose- looks like a screw in them when you turn it upside down and look into it- there are no markings of any kind on it- any info would be appreciated

How big is this? Could it have been a clock topper? Ansonia had many models that had statues like this as ornamentation on top of the clock.

This figure is about 16" in height, approximately 10 pounds- seems too heavy for a clock topper.

If it is a clock topper it would have been on a marble clock. Here is an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/FRENCH-MUSKATEER-FIGURAL-CLOCK-BI-COLOR-MARBLE-C1840-/200564786384?pt=Antiques_Decorative_Arts&hash=item2eb297c4d0

      and another: http://cgi.ebay.com/18-China-bronzer-marble-warrior-sit-horse-clock-/280607234907?pt=Art_Sculpture&hash=item41557e9b5b

Imagine how heavy it would be on top of a marble clock! Nice piece regardless if it is a clock topper or not. It being a clock topper might explain why there are no markings on it, the markings could have been somewhere else on the clock. Hope this helps.
