Frosted Lion Compote. This oval clear compote has a collared frosted base, with a resting lion pressed on the side, while the lid has a frosted, sitting lion finial. It measures 8 3/4 inches long x 8 1/2 inches tall. Made circa 1877.
I found this at a yard sale in southern Mississippi. Since I had done my research (homework) I knew I was getting a good deal.
Thank you!
very nice piece, can you tell us what you know about it?
The Frosted Lion pattern was made by Gillinder & Sons circa 1877 to celebrate America's Centennial. There are some that think that the (British) Lion was used in this pattern to poke fun at England for having been defeated by a bunch of "farmers with pitchforks" 100 years before the Centenial.
