I have a pair of 1960s teak arm chairs which were sitting in my mum's second sitting area. I remember them as a child and as I grew up, the chairs grew older, the cushions sagged and the wooden arms were all white and fading. They were truly unattractive and nobody ever sat on them. One day I saw the same chair in a vintage shop with a lovely lime green cushion cover and white piping and I figured once my mum's chairs were given a makeover, they would be fine. So I convinced her to give them to me, none of my siblings fought me for them because they were so yucky.
I had good intentions of sending them to get a sanding and a polishing but I didn't ever get round to it until one day, my mother-in-law who was in town for a visit, decided to clean them up with a damp cloth and detergent. That was truly transformational, the yucky stuff on the wood especially the arms were from years of human oil and skin deposits. They wiped right off and the beautiful wood grain could be seen again. I rubbed teak oil on the wood, had new cushions and covers made and I am so happy with their transformation. Nobody could recognise them as the same yucky arm chairs mum had for ages!
Hi Bellin68 and mustangtony for the appreciation.
