Paul Raoul de Facheux D' Humy fled France during the Franco-Prussian
War and went to England. In London he founded Aurora Glass Co. He hired Venetian workers to produce Vasa Murrhina glass.
This piece is rose red with gold decoration. Polished rim and pontil.
Photos 2 and 3 show examples of his work in the Bristol Blue Glass Museum(U.K.) and Bonham's London auction of British glass (Dec. 2010).

I was watching it too. I'd never heard of this company. I really need to spend my next amount of learning time to late 1800's early 1900's Italian glass. Can anyone give me some good reference books to start with? I just love this aventurine/vasa murrana stuff. Sparkly is good. ; )

(btw I did catch that this was English the italian glass bit was a loose association. I do that generality/loose association thing a lot)

So how do you know that this is Aurora glass and not something else?

Greatsnowyowl : The woman who sold it did extensive research and I sent the photos to the glass curator at the British Museum (for backup). When I first saw the piece I was thinking Loetz Argentan.....but I soon discounted that. THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

I was just wondering what exactly differentiated this from other foil glass on the market? It looks very different from loetz argentine to me. But it doesn't look that different from other foil glass that has been on the market at different points in history.

I saw the bristol blue museum when I was looking around for this but I wrote them off as a source for showing documented items because they're a personal collection attained thru auctions. what they say is just as reputable as what anyone here might say. They are a sales room that happens to have collected some stuff but they don't actually have documents and archives.

British museum I'd trust but I don't think this red piece looks anything like the stuff they show there that was donated by the founder. Those are all grey and black pieces. This appears to have rivulets like wide crackle glass. Actual little depressions you could feel with your hands. Argentin and the pics from the British museum of aurora glass look smooth. Like you'd feel no outside dimples in the glass. I always thought the bowls with the lizards were either Stourbridge or Harrach.

Not saying it's not Aurora glass. I really don't know anything about the company. I just wonder what makes it Aurora vs other companies?
