Your first guy may be fraternal-- the shoulder insignia looks to have initials at the end, which is not something I have encountered in military rank (US).

Jason!!!!!!! Perfect this women was a cousin in our family, I have pictures and wills of their house and children from 1880s. Some letters and postcards, now i bet i should look for addresses on these cards. I did find a large letter one Preston was in charge of a church i Beverly and he wrote about getting a new organ for the church. The proble getting this into the church was tough my wife's G. Grandfather was a singer as a hobby, he knew Boston singer teachers and did sing in Boston and here in a minstrel show i posted the shot here. Now i will look for mere thanks, Steve

This is E Preston as shown Emily Preston, very old print maybe from 1870s, we do other Preston pictures. My Wife's Dad name was Alan Preston Cook and he had a desk saved/called as a Preston Desk, given to the first son, my wife's brother. I do have some 8/10 prints from 1930s when the Preston's came together, they were all tall and over 60 yrs old. The shots were saved but some were out of focus, but have names.

The Putham's from Danvers town which in 1815 was in Salem had the men Perley Putham from 1776 war,\"Here was Born - Gen. Israel Putnam - January 7, 1718"
