    Hello,
I am searching for information on this believed to be a snuff box. It is 2 and 1/4" x 3 and 1/2". The etching on top is a hunting scene of a dog and bird. It is made of wood or paper mache'. The inside lining is deteriorated. It was given to me by my mother-n-law many years ago. Any information will be appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Lynda

Hi Lynda, was your mother-in-law Scottish? Your belief is correct, it is a snuff box. It is Scottish as well, and decorated in drawn penwork. Generally referred to as Mauchline ware, these wares were also made in the towns of Cumnock, Ochiltree, Catrine and originally in Laurencekirk where the concealed hinge seen on your box was first invented. These worked great for holding snuff in and keeping it fresh. Yours is is very nice condition from what I can seen in your pics. Pheasant hunting it looks like, and this would be a somewhat charactistic scene, and you often see other hunting scenes, or landscapes, flowers, and scenes from legend and poetry. Finely drawn and very charming. My best guess to age is circa 1820. Don't worry about the lead paint lining, as the exfoliation is typical, and is to be expected. It is a very nice gift. Enjoy!! Regards, P
