Here is the latest find. I am not sure about this one. Looks to be older, but I don't think it is too old. Perhaps the outside is tarnished tin? The inside looks to be hand cut wood at least. Not sure, but I wanted to see what others thought before I clean it up. My guess would be a small jewelry box.
6 inches long
4 1/2 inches wide
1/2 inches tall
15.2 oz.
A cigar box? Chinese export. If it was silver I think it would be marked. Does it smell like nickel?
vetraio50, yes the cigar box makes perfect sense. I am not sure if it smells like nickel....smells like cigars! Thanks! I'll see if there are any markings.
Its tough to say without seeing it in person, silver CAN look like that, kind of powdery white. Does it have a "metallic" smell when you rub it with your fingers? This is where acid would come in handy
I mean it does look like silver underneath. But the polishing hasn't gotten me anywhere. Still gold color. I quit.
A quick question here. I discovered the mark, "MADE IN CHINA". Would this disqualify it as Chinese export? From the research I can only find markings like "CHINA" or "SILVER". I believe MADE IN CHINA started in the 1970's no?
I would not disqualify this as silver just yet, however, A great deal of polishing looks like it is finally bringing on the "silver" color.
